Portfolio of websites designed by Graham Boston

Accredited Website Designer, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

With a background in publishing and graphic design, I designed my first web page in 1996. For me, designing websites is an opportunity to create something aesthetically pleasing that also works on a practical level, bringing clients new business and new contacts, often from all over the world.

In August 2006 I became an accredited Business Link web developer.

Here is a selection of the sites I have designed between 1997 and 2008, starting with the most recent:

Evelyn Harvey Medical Writing Evelyn Harvey is a medical writer specialising in the study of tuberculosis. Currently working on her Phd, she also writes articles for the scientific community and science sections of newspapers such as The Guardian.

Evelyn needed a simple website to promote her medical writing services, and which enables potential clients to contact her easily. The site is valid XHTML 1.0.

Website completed March 2008.

Nigel de Berker is a Tree Consultant with many year's experience of working in the arboricultural field, both as a tree surgeon and consultant.

The brief for the Wessex Tree Consultancy website was to have a basic online presence and provide information on the various services offered.

Website completed November 2007.

Joy de Berker is an artist working near Bath, and married to Nigel, above. she paints landscapes, seascapes and other subjects using oils, acrylics and other media. The brief was to create an online gallery of her work, as well as provide information about her working methods and forthcoming exhibitions.

As with Our Paris Apartment (below), all the information is presented in one page, yet in a visually simple, accessible and easy to use way. The site is valid XHTML 1.0 Transitional and fully compatible with the latest web standards as defined by The World Wide Web Consortium.

Website completed August 2007.

Pilgrims Mind Body Spirit is a (real!) shop located opposite the Chocolate and Fudge shop below. For this site the client, Bill Anderton, wanted an update to the site I originally designed in 1998, and which he could populate with products himself. Another requirement was that music clips from audio cds could be played easily.

Like his other site, it employs a full eCommerce and customer-management system for the smooth processing of orders.

Website structure completed June 2007, Site live in August 2007.

Pilgrims Chocolates and Fudge is situated in College Court, next to Gloucester Cathedral. The proprietor, Bill Anderton, whose Pilgrims Mind Body Spirit website I designed in 1998 (see below), asked me in July 2006 to give his existing Chocolates and Fudge website a makeover, and to automate the sales and customer management process.

The site has a full 'shopping basket' system and private areas for wholesale and corporate customers. All the products (fabulous chocolates, mounds of fudge and old-fashioned sweets such as sugar-mice) were photographed in-house and retouched using Adobe Photoshop.

Website completed November 2006.

Testimonial (110k, Adobe Acrobat file).

If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader, it can be downloaded at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html (free, 15.MB). Alternatively, it is available on the CDs that come with computer magazines.

Our Paris Apartment is a newly renovated apartment in Le Marais, in the vibrant heart of Paris, and is available for holiday lets.

The brief was to create a site that contained all the information a potential guest might need to know, such as local places of interest, maps, booking form, enquiry form, photographs, room layout map etc, yet avoiding the complexity of a multi-page site. The client wanted the site to have the look of an interiors magazine article, to reflect the contemporary chic of the decor.

Website completed June 2006.

Olivia du Monceau is a young production designer working in theatre and films, and a graduate of LIPA, the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. Her website, which is very simple in design, shows examples of her stage-craft, and its visual theme is based on her smart black and pink business card.

Website completed March 2006.

Jenna Monroe is a talented singer, pianist and singing teacher, living in the UK. The brief for this site was that it should enable potential agents to hear her vocal skills and be able to contact her quickly and easily.

You can listen to clips from a wide variety of her songs, in both lo- and hi-fi.

Website completed February 2006.

Règne is a beautiful 10-bedroomed country house located in south-western France. It is available to let as either one or two separate properties (La Grande Maison and La Petite Maison).

The brief was to design a site that evoked 1950s visual style, whilst avoiding the usual clichés of holiday websites.

Website completed February 2006.

Lucy Byatt. Lucy is an illustrator, sculptor, cartoonist and film-maker based in Cheltenham. She designed the pages and asked me to put a site together using Macromedia Dreamweaver, then host it. The job needed to be completed within 10 days, in time for the 2005 Florence Biennalle.

The Centre for Contemporary Furniture. Based in the fashionable Montpellier area of Cheltenham, the Centre showcases the work of contemporary furniture makers and designers. They wanted a site that would match their ethos of good design, simplicity and style. It is a flash-enabled site, since animation has been used throughout.

Website completed Autumn 2003.

Please note that the Centre has now closed, due to flood damage in August 2004.

Sound Travels - Music cds, clothing, sensual products and more...Sound Travels sells an eclectic mix of music cds, clothing, lighting and other products from around the world.

The site is fully e-commerce enabled, and once the framework was set up and graphics such as the large banner designed, I trained the proprietor, Jonathan Barnett, in how to add products to the site, take orders and to make changes as and when he wishes. Google picked up the site automatically, and within two weeks of being online, Jonathan was receiving on average an order per day.

The site was expanded dramatically in the autumn of 2004 by the addition of over 7,000 individual audio clips, so that you can listen to samples from every CD he  sells.

1st phase of website completed Spring 2004.

Please note that since November 2007 this website has been redesigned by someone else, so is no longer part of my portfolio.

Laurence Owen is a new young British figurative painter and animator. In 2005 he won a New Young British Talent prize given by the Boundary Gallery, London. He is the son of John and Fiona Owen (see below).

This website was commissioned by John and Fiona for Laurence's 21st birthday, and contains examples of his paintings, drawings and sculptures, as well as stills from an animation. The aim with this site was to present Laurence's portfolio in as simple, clean and accessible a way as possible. It contains an example of a simple java animation.

Website completed September 2005.

Training Evaluation Solutions, co-run by James Hunt, provides companies with a way of evaluating the changes in behaviour, attitude and work methods in staff brought about by training courses they have run. I was asked recently in April 2005 to create a website based on the style of an existing website they had created.

The site keeps mostly to a simple frame, so there is almost no scrolling required. To move from page to page you either click on the 'next page' button (bottom right) or use the large navigation bar, which highlights the page you are looking at.

Website completed April  2005.

To discuss your needs, please call me for a no-obligation chat on (01242) 228796. I will do my best to answer your questions and clarify your options.

If you are serious about wanting a website, call me to arrange a free, no-obligation meeting at my home in Cheltenham.

Why Choose Me to Design Your Site?

Since I work from home in Leckhampton, Cheltenham (Gloucestershire), my overheads are low, and because of this I am able to offer  competitive rates compared to most web design bureaux. I am flexible in the way that I work, and clients have told me they appreciate that I have understood they may be unfamiliar with the technical side of computers and graphics, and my guidance in turning their ideas or wishes into reality.

My aim is to help you have a web site that fits in with your individual aims or the aims of your business or organisation.

My philosophy is to empower you rather than making you dependent on me, by providing you wherever possible with the tools and know-how to be able to update your site for yourself. That way you won't have to keep paying me to do it for you!
